The joy of taking a mini vacation in the middle of a maxi vacation is something that may not always be an option, but during a visit to Ocean City, it isn’t just an option, it is highly recommended! That’s not to say that you won’t experience a getaway you will never forget and will wish never had to end if you did decide to limit your activities to what can be done in Ocean City; it’s just notice that more is more, and when you want to live life out loud, day trips from Ocean City, MD will be the more you deserve, especially when you return home to your Coastal Resort Rentals retreat every evening!
Assateague Island Adventures
Once upon a time, a visit to Assateague Island wouldn’t really have been considered a day trip from Ocean City, MD. Instead, it was just an extension of Ocean City and not a separate island at all, but time and nature separated us, and an Assateague Island adventure is our first suggestion for your itinerary. Offering a ruggedly wild escape from real life (or vacation life!), visitors spend time on its pristine beaches, kayaking calm waters, or viewing the famous wild ponies, from a safe distance, of course!
The best place to see these beautiful creatures is with a drive through the park, Assateague State Park and there are also guided tours that will bring you to where the ponies roam free. Additionally, the Assateague Lighthouse is open for public tours, allowing guests to climb its 125 steps to the top where the views are the most breathtaking. The tours are free but donations are definitely accepted and after the tour, hungry travelers will appreciate the sandwiches, burgers, and subs sold at Five Tides, which is literally the only restaurant in the area but is also one that serves delicious food.
Exploring Berlin
No, we’re not sending you across the ocean to visit the site of the famed wall; Berlin is a historic town located right here in Maryland, just about 10 miles away from your Coastal Resort Rentals sanctuary. Acknowledged as “America’s Coolest Small Town,” the town began as a land grant of over 300 acres back in 1677 (we told you it was historic!) and the beauty of the town reflects its longevity. Today, it is known for its shops, restaurants, and annual Peach Festival, which is held on August 2nd this year, offering live music on the lawn of the museum, and everything that can be made with peaches, including strudel, dumplings, salsa, and much more. If the peaches just whet your appetite, a visit to the Sterling Tavern, 119 N Main Street, will fill your belly, offering an elevated pub grub (and seafood) menu from a building that was once a family home.
See the Rocket’s Red Glare From Wallops Island
When you think NASA and rocket launches, Florida or Texas are the two states that probably come to mind, but NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island in Virginia has been around since 1945, starting out as an airplane flight facility and adding rocket launches to its agenda as they began to be a thing. Offering a Launch Viewing Area located a few miles away from the rocket launch site, there is a RockSat-X launch scheduled for August 12th or 13th this year, in case this sounds like an adventure that would excite you. Wallops Island is further away from Ocean City than Berlin or Assateague, taking just over an hour to reach, but we don’t think you will mind the drive when you get to experience your first rocket launch. As on Assateague Island, there is just one restaurant, Ocean Deli, 33591 Chincoteague Road, but it is a fantastic place for lunch, serving hearty sandwiches that will fill you up until you return to Ocean City.
Savoring Snow Hill
The last town on our road trip of wonder is the small town of Snow Hill, located just 27 miles outside of Ocean City on the banks of the Pocomoke River. Offering a breathtaking countryside and the Furnace Town Historic Site, which is an outdoor museum that will allow you to experience what life was like in a 19th century village, your step back in time will be one you won’t soon forget. The museum is comprised of a series of historic buildings, including the Nassawango Iron Furnace and provides a fascinating peek into the past. Elliot’s Tavern, 208 W Green Street, is famous for its attentive servers and amazing crab cakes, making it a great place to fuel up before heading back to Ocean City.
